I honestly don't know either. I suppose there have always been idiots in the public eye, but in the past they had at least to do something other than just be idiots to get noticed. So-called 'reality TV' (which is, of course, anything but) is a self-fulfilling prophecy; as you point out, the dull and insignificant are given media exposure and, hey presto, they miraculously become objects of interest and (God help us) 'celebrities.' &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
I suppose a Marxist might claim it was an example of the commodification of desire (i.e. to be significant), which can then be used to create a market, with the usual supply/demand/profit equation. There are worse explanations, e.g. that a significant proportion of the population has retreated into a kind of helpless infantilism, or that we're all possessed by demons of imbecility, or something.&lt;br&gt;
